More from John Bell and Trudi Cohen
John Bell writes: The Great Small Works, a six-member
theater company based in New York has been doing toy theater shows for
over seven years. We have been creating and performing our own toy
theater epic, Terror As Usual, which is now up to six episodes.
In addition, we have made and performed toy theater versions of Laurence
Olivier's Hamlet and our own version of Faust
using Marlowe, Goethe, and a 19th-Century German puppet play
as sources. We have toured these shows around the East Coast, as
well as to France last year. We have also been doing toy theater
workshops (see [Happenings]
) in New York and beyond. In January 1998 we did a toy theater workshop
in Mexico City with 70 artists, students, and puppeteers, who
created and performed 16 different new toy theater shows. I wrote
a Short Entertaining History of Toy Theater which we have
printed and distributed; [Available
for $2.] I also perform this history, accompanying it with
a number of illustrations. I would be happy if we could stay in touch.
We are always looking for possible participants in our toy theater festivals
and we welcome suggestions about people who might want to participate.
